How to cancel a subscription that is hard to cancel

Where the cancel button hides, what to say when they push back, and how to check that it actually ended.

Some subscriptions take a single click to start and a phone call to stop. That is not an accident, and it is worth knowing before you try, so that the friction does not talk you into keeping something you do not want.

Finding the subscription is one job, covered in how to find every subscription you are paying for. This guide is about the next one: actually ending it.

Where the cancel option usually hides

  • Directly on the company's site

    Where to look
Account, then Billing or Membership, then Cancel or Manage plan
  • Through Apple

    Where to look
    Settings, your name, Subscriptions
  • Through Google Play

    Where to look
Play Store, your profile, Payments and subscriptions
  • Through a streaming or app bundle

    Where to look
The bundle provider's account page, not the individual service
  • Through a phone or internet provider

    Where to look
The provider's account page or a customer service call

What to say when they push back

Pick the situation you are in. Keep it short and polite, and say the same thing again if you need to.

Pick the one you are facing

“Thank you, but I would like to cancel today. Please confirm the cancellation and the date it takes effect.”

Check that it actually ended

5 things to do

Ticks are for this visit only. Nothing here is saved anywhere.

Cancel one thing today

If you have found several subscriptions, do not try to cancel them all in one sitting. Pick the one that costs the most for the least use and end that today. The rest can follow, and one cancelled charge is worth more than a list of intentions.

Use the annual figure to choose. Fourteen ninety nine a month sounds small. It is more than one hundred and seventy nine dollars a year, which is a different question.
