Most people who set a financial goal do not stick to it. That number is usually presented as a discipline problem. It is mostly a design problem.
Almost every budgeting tool requires continuous manual upkeep to stay accurate. Miss a week of categorising and the figures on screen are wrong. Once they are wrong you stop trusting them, and once you stop trusting them the app is decoration.
The maintenance burden is the whole problem
The setup is genuinely enjoyable. Categories, budgets per category, a clean dashboard. That is the part that gets designed carefully, because it is what people see when deciding to sign up.
Week six is not designed for at all. Week six is two weeks of uncategorised transactions, three splits you never finished, and a dashboard confidently reporting a number you know is nonsense. Nothing in the product acknowledges that this is the normal state of things.
Four ways they break
- They require categorising every transaction, which is a chore with no visible reward.
- They treat a missed week as a data problem for you to repair rather than a normal thing that happens.
- They present precise figures built on incomplete data, without ever saying so.
- They add streaks and scores, so falling behind becomes a judgement rather than a gap.
Rigid budgets fail for a separate reason
Envelope style budgets assume a stable month. Most months are not stable, and one unexpected cost breaks several categories at once. Repairing that takes more effort than the budget was saving.
Most people who budget are doing it to make sure the essentials are covered, nothing more ambitious than that. That is a much smaller question than a full category system, and it can be answered with far less upkeep.

Tick the ones the app you are using actually does. Anything left unticked is a reason it will be deleted by March.

Ask what happens when you stop paying attention
Whatever you use, this is the question worth asking before you invest a weekend in setup. Some tools degrade gracefully and are still broadly correct after a neglected two weeks. Others become actively misleading and then demand an hour of repair before they are any use again.
Only the first kind is still installed a year later.
